A tough opening day in Pensacola for UNA
The first day of the 2010-11 season for the University of North Alabama ended in defeat for two Lions teams. In extremely close and hard-fought games, Missouri-St. Louis defeated UNA 3-2 in volleyball and Barry defeated UNA in soccer 5-4 in 2OT.
The UNA volleyball (0-1) team has traveled to the Gulf Coast to join eight other teams from across the nation for the Comfort Inn-vitational, which is not a tournament but a cross-over event. Leading 2-0 (25-21, 25-16), this appeared to be another easy victory for Missouri-St. Louis Tritons (2-0) on the day as they had defeated UAH 3-0 in a morning game. But the Lions showed fight as they won the next to games (25-20, 25-18) to force a fifth game (13-15). UNA was led by senior Sarah Roberts who recorded a double-double with 15 kills and 10 digs, while junior Brigid O’Brien had 11 digs and freshmen Hope Rayburn contributed with 44 assists. The Lions will face Florida Tech and Eckerd tomorrow.
The day would prove as exciting, yet disappointing for the UNA soccer team (0-1) as they lost to Barry University 5-4 in two overtimes. The Bucs scored first 9:31 into the first half before the Lions rolled off two goals and a successful penalty kick (two by sophomore Chloe Roberts and one by sophomore Jennifer Osmond) to lead 3-1 at the intermission. Just over three minutes into the second period junior Jamie Takala put UNA up by three with a header goal. It would be the last score for the Lions, however, as the Buccaneers came back with four unanswered goals including the game winner in double overtime to deal UNA a heartbreaking defeat. The Lions will play Nova Southeastern Sunday in their final game of the ArgosFanShop.com Invitational hosted by West Florida.
