PENSACOLA, Fla., – After dropping the season-opener to Missouri-St. Louis on Friday, the University of North Alabama volleyball team recorded a split on the second day of the UWF Comfort Inn-Vitational, knocking off Florida Tech before falling to Eckerd Saturday in a pair of South Region matches.
Senior Sarah Roberts had 35 kills in two matches. The outside hitter from Maryville, Tenn., also hit .448 on the day as UNA wrapped up weekend play with a 1-2 record.
Against Florida Tech, Roberts had 21 kills and hit .528 for the match as the Lions recorded the sweep. Freshman Hope Rayburn added 41 assists during the 25-19, 25-21, 25-23 victory.
As a team, the Lions hit .248, including a .381 showing in the opening set. Ari Smith also reached double digits in kills with 11, while Lauren Greenhill produced 16 digs on the match.
In the second match, the two teams split the first two sets before the Tritons scored the victory with a pair of wins in sets three and four. Statistically, the Lions dominated the opening set, out-hitting Eckerd .250 to .100 but came up on the short end of a 25-23 decision.
Roberts had seven kills in the first set while Greenhill turned in 13 digs, but the Lions could not come away with the victory.
In the second set, UNA hit .464 as a team in a 25-17 win. Ari Smith had five of her 11 kills for the match as the Lions briefly tied the match at 1-1.
Eckerd was able to pull away for the win with a 25-16 victory in set three and a 25-18 win in the final set. Roberts finished with a match-high 14 kills with Smith and Natalie Marsh added 11 kills each. Rayburn also had 42 assists and just missed a double-double with eight digs.
Defensively, Greenhill and Brigid O’Brien finished with 25 and 18 digs respectively. Roberts also just missed a double-double with nine digs for the match.
UNA will be in Savannah, Ga., next weekend for four matches at the Armstrong Atlantic Pirate Volleyball Classic.
