Lions win home opener


FLORENCE — After playing on the road for the first two weeks of the 2010 soccer season, the University of North Alabama finally got the chance to play at home Wednesday and responded with a 4-0 shutout of Clayton State. The Lions, now 3-2 overall, won all ten of their home matches last season and have now recorded 11 straight home wins.

The first half was scoreless but the Lions exploded for four goals in a nine minute stretch of the second half to put the game away. Sophomore Nikki Brown and Hollie Loud had a goal and an assist each to lead the Lions offensive efforts.

UNA’s first goal was scored by freshman Heather Farmer Rockledge, Fla. at the 60:11 mark off an assist from Chloe Roberts. Roberts then got her eighth goal of the season and 40th career goal off an assist from Hollie Loud at the 63:22 mark. Brown scored in the 65th minute off an assist from Jamie Takala and the final goal came from Loud off an assist from Brown.

UNA junior goalkeeper Alex McLay of Naples, Fla., recorded her second shutout of the season and has now pushed her school career record for shutouts to 12. She had one save against the Lakers and blocked three other shots.
