UNA rallies for 2nd place as host of D2 Preview
FORD CITY, Ala. – The University of North Alabama men’s golf team made up eight strokes in the final round but it wasn’t quite enough to catch Chico State as the Wildcats claimed the championship of the Division II Preview Tournament at the Robert Trent Jones at the Shoals Fighting Joe Course.
Chico State turned in rounds of 279 and 292 for a 571 total, two strokes better than host North Alabama’s 573. After shooting an opening round 289, UNA fired a 284 Tuesday but it was not enough to catch the Wildcats. Chico State finished five under par, while North Alabama was three under.
Indianapolis was third at 580, followed by Abilene Christian (582), Valdosta State (585), Central Missouri (591), Grand Canyon (596), Delta State (597), Northeastern State (598), UNA JV (598), Bellarmine (604), West Georgia (604), St. Thomas Aquinas (605), Northern Kentucky (609), Henderson State (625), Arkansas-Fort Smith (629), Lambuth (631), Arkansas-Monticello (660) and Christian Brothers (664).
Abilene Christian’s Alex Carpenter won medalist honors with a five-under-par 139 total, shooting rounds of 71 and 68. He was joined on the all-tournament team by UNA’s Jake Greer and Chico State’s Kyle Souza at 140, Abilene Christian’s Cyril Bouniol at 141 and Chico State’s Kevin Rei at 142. Greer fired the low round of the tournament Tuesday with a 66.
The tournament was a preview for the NCAA Division II National Championship which UNA will host on the Fighting Joe Course in May, 2011.
