Lions drop heart-breaker to UWF

FLORENCE — The showdown between the Gulf South Conference women’s soccer leaders was everything it was built up to be as West Florida scored in the 83rd minute to pull out a 2-1 over North Alabama. The win gives West Florida solo possession of the GSC lead at 6-0, while UNA falls to 5-1 in league play. UNA is 13-3 overall and UWF is 13-2.

With the game tied at 1-1, West Florida’s Shakira Duncan flipped a ball backwards over her head and into the goal at the 82:36 mark to give the Argonauts the win. It was the 17tgoal of the season for Duncan, who was the 2009 NCAA Division II National Player of the Year. West Florida had taken a 1-0 lead with just 1:25 left in the first half on a goal by Duncan off an assist from Jodi-Ann Robinson. ¬†UNA continued to trail 1-0 until the 67:21 mark when Chloe Roberts scored her 24th goal of the season to tie the match.

The loss snapped a 16-match home winning streak for North Alabama and also ended UNA’s overall 12-match winning streak this season.
