Lions fall in second round
CLEVELAND, Miss.. – Delta State scored on its opening possession of the game and never looked back as the Statesmen defeated the University of North Alabama 47-24 in the second round of the NCAA Division II Playoffs at Parker Field.
North Alabama had defeated Delta State 31-7 on the same field back on Oct. 28, but this meeting was different as the Lions’ offense could never get going and the Statesmen ran the ball consistently and did not turn it over.
At the half DSU had rolled up 272 total yards to just 70 for UNA and led 27-7. The Lions were just five-of-11 passing in the half for 23 yards. The Statesmen then scored on their initial possession of the second half and finished the game with 524 total yards and 359 yards rushing, both season highs allowed by the UNA defense.
North Alabama finishes its season at 9-4 overall, but the loss snaps a streak of five consecutive seasons with 10 wins or more. It was also the most points allowed by UNA in its 53 all-time meetings with Delta State. The Statesmen advance to play Albany State in the quarterfinals of the Division II Playoffs.
