Both UNA teams defeat UAM at home
FLORENCE – Dana Jackson scored 19 points and pulled down nine rebounds to lead the University of North Alabama women’s basketball team to a 69-54 home victory over Arkansas-Monticello Sunday afternoon at Flowers Hall. The win is the sixth in the last seven games for the Lions, who improve to 7-4 on the season. With the loss, UAM falls to 4-7 on the year.
UNA led 29-27 at the break before using a 17-0 second-half run to pull away. The Lions began the run after a basket by the Cotton Blossoms put the visitor on top 41-40 with 12:00 remaining. Sequoyah Cliff scored eight of her 15 points during the stretch as UNA grabbed a 57-41 lead at the 6:04 mark. UAM would get no closer than 12 the rest of the way.
Sanqueeta Meardith added 16 points and a season-high eight assists on the day.
North Alabama held commanding leads in rebounding (46-32), points in the paint (52-33) and fast-break points (22-11).
LIONS USE THREES TO BEAT ARKANSAS-MONTICELLO
FLORENCE – The University of North Alabama men’s basketball team connected on 14 three-point baskets Sunday evening during a 96-75 home win over Arkansas-Monticello. Five players reached double digits in scoring as the Lions broke a two-game slide to improve to 5-8 on the season. The loss for UAM represents just the third of the season as the Boll Weevils fall to 8-3 on the year.
Beaumont Beasley had six three-pointers and finished with 22 points to lead UNA. The junior from Kansas City, Mo., was 6-of-8 from long range, including a 5-of-6 showing in the second half. As a team, the Lions hit 80 percent from beyond the arc over the final 20 minutes of play.
North Alabama held a 25-20 lead midway through the first half before a 10-0 spurt put the home team on top by 15 points with 6:51 remaining in the opening stanza. The Lions took a 48-34 lead into the locker room.
In the second half, UNA led by as many as 26 points as the Lions shot over 61 percent from the floor including 8-of-10 from three-point range. Ricky Davison hit four three-pointers and finished with 18 points. Warrick Mastin added 14 points for the Lions while Nick Luttrell tossed in 13 points on the night. Marcus Landry also had 10 points and seven rebounds for UNA.
