VALDOSTA, Ga., – Courtnei Bowens came off the bench to score 14 points and lead the University of North Alabama women’s basketball team to a 49-44 Gulf South Conference victory over Valdosta State Thursday evening at The Complex on the VSU campus. With the win, the Lions improve to 10-5 overall and open GSC play at 1-0 on the year.

The Blazers, defending East Division champions and pre-season favorite to repeat, fall to 7-7 overall, 0-1 GSC. The game marked the first win in Valdosta for the UNA women since the 2000-01 season and represents head coach Terry Fowler’s first victory at VSU.

Thursday’s game also marked the second time this season the Lions went on the road and came away with a low-scoring victory. On Dec. 18, UNA knocked off Harding 50-46 on the Lady Bisons’ home floor. Against the Blazers, bench play proved to be a big factor as UNA held a commanding 24-2 advantage in the category.
