Student vote against move to Division I
FLORENCE, Ala. (AP) — University of North Alabama students who voted this week say they don’t want to move the school’s athletic program to NCAA Division I.
The school currently competes in Division II. The TimesDaily newspaper reports that 1,772 students, or about 25 percent of the student body, participated in the three-day, campus-wide vote this week.
The decision will ultimately be up to the board of trustees and will depend on the school being invited to join Division I.
Of the students who voted, 58 percent said they do not agree with the move, while 42 percent were in favor.
Students now pay a $12 student athletic fee per semester. If the school changes divisions, that fee would increase to $10 per credit hour, an average of between $120 and $150 per semester.
