Lions win golf Spring Classic
MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. — Jake Greer and Ty Chandler finished first and second individually and combined to help the University of North Alabama win the 2011 UNA Spring Classic at the Robert Trent Jones at the Shoals Fighting Joe Course.
UNA finished with a three round 873 after shooting 293, 288 and 292. The Lions had a seven-stroke lead over Northern Kentucky entering the final round and won by 11, with Tampa finishing second at 887.
Greer, a junior at UNA, had rounds of 73, 70 and 71 to take Medalist honors with a 214 total. Chandler was close behind at 216 after shooting 70, 73, 73. Northern Kentucky’s Jones Brown was third at 218, while Andrew Funk of Drury and Laurence Noot of Central Missouri also made the all-tournament team with 219 totals.
Northern Kentucky was third in the team standings at 889 followed by Drury (898), Lindenwood (906), Central Missouri (910), Delta State (910), Concord (915), Wilmington (921) and Harding (924) in the top ten.
William Carey was 11th overall at 926, followed by Wallace State (929), UNA Purple (934), Missouri Western (938), Ferris State (958), Lincoln (965), Arkansas Tech (969) and Fairmont State (973).
The win was the first for UNA this spring after winning three tournaments in the fall. The Lions are ranked No. 10 nationally in the NCAA Division II by GolfStat.
UNA’s Jace Windom tied for 13th at 223, while Tyler Ekenberg and Ricky Stimets tied for 20th at 225.
Freshman Mason Rogers led the UNA Purple team with a 226 total and tied for 24th individually. Graham Byron tied for 49th (235), Nick Sparks tied for 55th (236), Andrew Freeman tied for 64th (240) and Nico Irrgang tied for 69th (241).
