Lions Win Top 10 Battle in Cowboys Stadium

ARLINGTON, Texas – The University of North Alabama recovered an onside kick with less than two minutes to go to preserve a 23-17 win over third ranked Abilene Christian in the Lone Star Football Festival at Cowboys Stadium Saturday. The Lions, ranked fourth in Division II, led 16-0 after the first period and led 23-10 in the closing minutes before fumbling the ball into the Wildcats’ end zone, killing a potential scoring threat that would have ended the game.

Abilene Christian responded with a 10-play, 80-yard drive to score with 1:42 left to make it 23-17. But North Alabama was able to recover the onside kick and then ran the clock out.

The win improves UNA’s record to 3-0 overall, while Abilene Christian falls to 1-1. The win also keeps UNA perfect all-time against the Lone Star Conference at 5-0.

“This was really a very special win,” said UNA head coach Terry Bowden. “To come out here and play the No. 3 team in the country in its own backyard, in an incredible atmosphere, and get a win – I couldn’t be more happy.”
