FLORENCE, Ala. – Playing in their final regular-season game at Braly Stadium, senior running back Wes Holland rushed for 154 yards and senior quarterback Lee Chapple threw for 189 yards and three touchdowns to lead the 17th ranked University of North Alabama Lions to a 28-3 Gulf South Conference win over West Georgia.
The win, UNA’s first GSC victory of the season, improves UNA’s record to 7-2 overall and 1-2 in the GSC. West Georgia falls to 5-4 and 1-2.
UNA never trailed in the game after taking a lead late in the first quarter on a 10-yard pass from Chapple to Jason Smith. Josh Montgomery added the extra point and UNA led 7-0 with 1:26 left in the first quarter. The UNA drive covered 46 yards in 11 plays.
West Georgia got its only score of the game on the next possession, driving 58 yards in six plays before Davis Brackett came on to boot a 21-yard field goal. The score made it 7-3 with 14:51 left in the second quarter. A 50-yard Tristan Purifoy kickoff return on the ensuing kick gave the Lions the ball at the West Georgia 25. Chapple found Mo Miliam open over the middle on the next play and he took it to the end zone for UNA’s second score/ Montgomery’s PAT made it 14-3 with 14:33 left in the half.
Purifoy was on the receiving end of UNA’s next score as Chapple hit him with two-yard scoring strike/. Mobtgomery’s kick extended the Lions’ lead to 21-3 with 20 seconds left in the half. North Alabama covered 91 yards in 10 plays on the drive.
UNA got its final score midway through the third quarter as Chris Coffey scored on a one-yard dive at the 5:31 mark. Montgomery’s kick made it 28-3.
North Alabama outgained the Wolves 450 to 194, rushing for 261 yards and passing for 189. Holland carried the ball 27 times for a career-high 154 yards, while Coffey gained 69 yards on 14 carries and Antwan Ivey had 52 yards on just six carries. Miliam led UNA’s receiving corp with eight catches for 108 yards.
West Georgia quarterback Emmanuel Taylor completed just nine of 22 passes for 81 yards and rushed for 54 yards on 13 carries.
The win was UNA’s seventh straight over West Georgia in the series. North Alabama closes its regular-season next Saturday, November 12, at Valdosta State. Kickoff for that game is 1 p.m. Central.
