For the third time in the last four years the University of North Alabama golf team has claimed the Gulf South Conference Championship. The Lions posted an impressive 24-stroke margin over second place West Florida. UNA won its first-ever GSC golf crown in 2009 and then won again in 2010. The Lions finished second to West Florida in 2011.
With the win, the UNA golf team has now won seven of its last eight events, including five of the six tournaments that the Lions have played in this spring. The Lions have a remarkable 65-6 head-to-head record this spring and have claimed the titles at the Mardi Gras Invitational, the Southeastern Collegiate, the Jim Bishop Toyota Classic, the Argonaut Invitational and now the GSC Championships.
North Alabama’s Ty Chandler finished second individually after a playoff with Valdosta State’s Nate Anderson for medalist honors. Chandler shot a 69 in the final round to get into the playoff and finished with a 218 total. UNA’s Jake Greer and Tyler Ekenberg also earned All-GSC Tournament honors. Greer was third overall with a 219 total and Tyler Ekenberg was fifth at 223. Ricky Stimets tied for sixth at 224 and Blaise Wilson was 12th at 230.
