The University of North Alabama men’s and women’s cross country teams each had rough outings Saturday at the NCAA South Region Championships at Sharon Johnston Park in Huntsville. The men’s team finished 13th while the UNA women were 15th on the day.
While the capstone event was the football victory against Arkansas Tech, there were many successful Lions teams this Homecoming week. The soccer team defeated UAH on the road, while the volleyball team swept Southern Indiana. Also, stand-out runner Hirbo Hirbo got his third win of the season in Cross Country.
Three UNA underclassmen earn repeat weekly honors from the conference. Junior volleyball libero Lauren Greenhill is Gulf South Conference East Division Defensive Player of the Week, while junior Hirbo Hirbo is GSC Cross Country Runner of the Week, both for the second consecutive week. Meanwhile, sophomore star Chloe Roberts was announced as conference Player of the Week after the Lions went 3-0 for the week.
University of North Alabama runner Hirbo Hirbo raced to his second straight cross country win Saturday, crossing the line first at the Fleet Feet/Earl Jacoby Memorial Cross Country Invitational. Hirbo clocked a time of 26:39, finishing 23 seconds ahead of UAH’s Samson Too. As a team the UNA men finished fifth in a field of seven schools.
North Alabama junior Hirbo Hirbo was named this week’s Gulf South Conference Men’s Cross Country Runner of the Week. Hirbo started the 2010 season with a bang, winning his first-ever event title at the 8K University of the South Invitational in Sewanee, TN. The Russellville, AL native crossed the finish line with a time of 26:26, which was two seconds ahead of the next finisher. Hirbo’s effort led the Lions to a fifth-place finish in nine-team event.
Junior cross country runner Hirbo Hirbo won the Sewanee Invitational men’s title today finishing with a time of 26:26. Emory University won both team titles as UNA finished fifth in the men’s team competition and eighth in the women’s race.
