Football standout Courtney Harris has been announced a finalist for the Upshaw Award, while Daktronics has deemed two Lions soccer All-Americans for the second time. Chloe Roberts repeats on the first-team as Nikki Brown is again named to the second-team. Three volleyball players have been honored with All-Region accolades with Sarah Robert earning a second-team nod along with honorable mentions for Natalie Marsh and Lauren Greenhill.
The University of North Alabama had four student-athletes named to the 2010 Daktronics Division II South Region Women’s Soccer Team. UNA sophomore forward Chloe Roberts and sophomore midfielder Nikki Brown were first-team All-South Region picks, while junior goalkeeper Alex McLay and sophomore defender Julia Osmond were second-team selections.
After 110 minutes of play and eight rounds of penalty kicks, the University of North Alabama and University of West Florida remained even in the quest for the 2010 Gulf South Conference Women’s Soccer Championship. The Lions ninth penalty shot went wide and West Florida freshman Alexis Pugh put her attempt in the net to give the Argonauts their third straight GSC title and an automatic bid to the 2010 NCAA Division II South Region Tournament.
The University of North Alabama cross country teams competed at the 2010 Gulf South Conference championships on November 6 with both the men’s and women’s teams finishing 10th.
For the second straight year the University of North Alabama women’s soccer team will play in the Gulf South Conference Tournament Championship Game after the Lions downed Christian Brothers 2-0 Friday in the semifinals. The Lions also had six players selected to the 2010 All-Gulf South Conference women’s soccer team.
The University of North Alabama scored four second half goals on the way to 5-0 soccer win over King College in the regular-season finale for both schools. North Alabama scored in the fourth minute to take the early lead but didn’t add to its lead until 48 minutes later. The Lions close the regular season at 15-3 overall and will begin play in the Gulf South Conference Tournament on Friday in Pensacola, Fla.
The showdown between the Gulf South Conference women’s soccer leaders was everything it was built up to be as West Florida scored in the 83rd minute to pull out a 2-1 over North Alabama. The win gives West Florida solo possession of the GSC lead at 6-0, while UNA falls to 5-1 in league play. UNA is 13-3 overall and UWF is 13-2.
